Dancing with sunflowers and meandering jasmine, our new heritage cushions pay homage to the legacy of iconic British textile designer William Morris. Made exclusively for The Cotswold Company by Morris & Co., each design takes inspiration from their 160-year-old print archive.
“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” – William Morris
To the iconic printmaker, home interiors were one of the foremost joys of everyday life. To this day, Morris & Co. continue to join our homes in the great tradition of his influential patterns – including our new cushions. Each design takes inspiration from their classic ‘Sunflower’ and ‘Jasmine’ prints.
CRAFT TRADITIONS
“William Morris always had an eye for creating evocative patterns that express a fundamental spirit people find so easy to engage with,” shares Jess Clayworth, Lead Designer at Morris & Co. Founded by Morris and his fellow creatives in 1861, “Morris & Co. sought to recapture slower, more deliberate craft traditions. Bringing in quality materials and nurturing ancient ways of making.”
UNFURLING FLORA
After the success of our Simply Morris tableware range, we couldn’t help but explore more of our favourite Morris & Co. patterns. Originally designed in 1879, the bold shapes of ‘Sunflower’ unfurl against vines and shrubbery, encapsulating the joyful essence of this ever-popular bloom.
‘Jasmine’ – created a few years earlier – hums with slightly gentler outlines and swaying movements. The delicate pattern overlays hawthorn florals with meandering jasmine trails. Printed with repeating structures in comforting hues, both cushions look just as lovely as a coordinating pair as they do as standalone pieces.
QUALITY MATERIALS
The longevity of Morris & Co.’s designs translates to the quality of their fabric too. Made from 100% cotton, our new cushions have a beautifully soft handle, woven with naturally durable fibres. Perfect for nestling into on the sofa, armchair or bed.
RICH TONES
“Through the incredible archive passed down to us from over 160 years of William Morris and Morris & Co.’s hard graft, we make considered adaptations to bring their vast portfolio to new audiences,” explains Jess. Available in Green, Indigo, Mustard, Grey and Burgundy, we wanted to add a seasonal warmth to these classic prints with two-tone, earthy shades. Echoing the chapters of autumn but also enriching fresher furnishings during brighter months.
From print to cushion, it’s Morris’ devotion to traditional craftsmanship and his affinity with our rambling British landscape that chimes so deeply with us, here at The Cotswold Company.
